It's official. I have been at university for a year now, and I think it's fair to say that I have gone through my fair share of questionable and uncomfortable outfit choices. Because I came from a school with strict uniform policies, university was the first sense of fashion freedom I had ever gotten, and it would be fair to say that I was 100% out of my depths. Thankfully, after being at university for a year now, I have gotten down pact which items are truly worth the investment, and some others that you could probably pass on. So, if you're like me and are struggling to figure out how to look cute, be sustainable and only purchase the essential items on a budget, then you're in the right place. Here are my top five university essentials for all you conscious consumers out there!
1. A Good Backpack
When at university, it is a given that you will be on your feet a fair bit, and although a handbag looks great, a backpack is much more practical and comfortable to lug around with you all day. So, if you're on the look out for a high quality backpack which won't break the budget, I would recommend you try out Terra Thread, a fair-trade company who make backpacks out of recycled cotton and GOTS certified dyes.
My Recommendation
Brand: Terra Thread
Price: $59AUD

2. Jeans
When all else fails, you can never really go wrong with a plain pair of jeans. Weather skinny, straight, blue or black is your style, purchasing a high quality pair of jeans for university will definitely be worth your investment. Despite the high price point of Levi's, I would recommend that you consider purchasing from this company. Not only are their styles timeless and high quality, but they also make strong efforts to improve their sustainability initiatives every day. To learn more about Levi's and their values, check out their website here.
My Recommendation
Brand: Levi's
Price: $110AUD

3. Sneakers
To ensure you are comfortable all day, I would recommend investing in a pair of high quality sneakers that can be worn with just about everything. A lot of different sneakers would certainly do the trick, however, I feel like you can never go wrong with the classic full white Air Force 1's. These shoes almost never go out of style, so they are a great long-term, sustainable investment to add to your closet.
My Recommendation
Brand: Nike
Price: $150AUD

4. Black Leggings
In or out of university, black leggings will always be a staple in my wardrobe. They are the kind of clothing item you don't need to think much about, and are super comfy all throughout the day (exactly what you need when you're at university). Although almost any leggings would do the job, if you're looking to invest in a high quality, no compromise pair of leggings with the ethics to back it up, I would definitely try out TALA. They are made out of recycled plastic bottles and factory offcuts, and were also developed by a student stying in university as well (an added bonus). I have tried and tested these leggings in an earlier review, so if you would like to learn more before purchasing from this company, please click here.
My Recommendation
Brand: TALA
Price: $75AUD

5. Basics
Even though all of these items are important, one of the things that has saved me over this past year are my basic tees and tanks. One of my favourite brands of all time, Afends, specialises in hemp basics, which are high quality, sustainable, ethical and trendy. I would recommend their basic t-shirts which come in six different colours for you to choose from, however, if the plain t-shirt vibe isn't quite your thing like myself, they also sell fun flares and graphic tees too.
My Recommendation
Brand: Afends
Price: $50AUD
